The citizens in Carencro, Louisiana have been complaining about a smell throughout their community for quite some time, and now they may finally have an answer as to where it is coming from.

Our media partners at KATC TV-3 spoke to someone in the city of Carencro and they reported the smell of rotten eggs in the air, and they are correct. Many have reported the same type of smell on social media for months, and now they may know where the stench is coming from.

For years, many in the Carencro area thought that the nasty smell could be coming from a nearby fish processing plant, but that is not so.

At a recent meeting before the city council, a spokesperson with the Department of Environmental Quality cited the source of the stench, which appears to be coming from a nearby landfill.

Rhonda McCormick, regional manager with DEQ said that her office has found an issue with the bedding or covering of a landfill near a roundabout in Carencro and that it is allowing the emission of Hydrogen Sulfide.

If you've ever produced Hydrogen Sulfide in a chemistry lab you know what it smells like and is unpleasant.

McCormick cites that the bedding at the landfill is not being maintained, thus allowing for venting, which would allow the build-up of Hydrogen Sulfide to escape and get into the air.

KATC reports that DEQ is still investigating the matter, while citizens in the city of Carencro hope that something can be done to eliminate the stench in their community.

The Lafayette news station contacted Acadiana Landfill for a comment, but they have not heard back.

Landfills are required to cover waste daily, to prevent odors, litter, and other potential threats to the environment.
