South Louisiana Cities Urge Residents to Conserve Water Amid Critical Shortages
The City of Opelousas, Youngsville, Lafayette, and others across South Louisiana urgently ask all residents and businesses to conserve water as freezing temperatures cause a severe strain on the city’s water system.

The water pressure in the distribution system continues to drop, and officials are asking for immediate cooperation from the public to prevent water outages.
Discolored Water and Low Pressure in Lafayette Parish Raising Major Concerns
Residents are reporting discolored water and low pressure due to the ongoing water shortage, and similar issues are being experienced across Lafayette Parish.
City officials emphasize that excessive dripping faucets are depleting the city’s water supply. Residents are now being asked to stop dripping faucets and suspend high-consumption activities like laundry or dishwashing.
“With two more nights of freezing temperatures expected and the potential for leaks as pipes thaw, immediate action is critical,” the city stated. Crews are working around the clock to repair water main breaks and leaks, but public cooperation is essential to maintain water for essential services, including hospitals and nursing homes.
The City of Opelousas stresses that “every drop counts” during this crisis. Residents are urged to use water only for essential needs to preserve water pressure and avoid further shortages.
Officials thank the community for their understanding and cooperation in this challenging time, emphasizing that collective action is key to overcoming the current crisis.
Lafayette Utilities System also issued an urgent request that customers avoid high-water consumption activities such as washing dishes and using washing machines.
