A shooting in Opelousas late Tuesday night resulted in the death of Chanterria Albert, a 23-year-old off-duty corrections deputy from the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office.

According to KLFY, the incident was reported to Opelousas Police around 10:30 p.m. in the 1100 block of Park Avenue. At the scene, officers found multiple shell casings and later learned that two gunshot victims had been taken to a local hospital. Deputy Albert died from her injuries, while the second victim remains in stable condition.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz confirmed the death and expressed his department's mourning. He said, “We are mourning the loss of one of our own to senseless gun violence.” Deputy Albert had been with the department since May 10, 2022, and worked alongside her mother, Deputy Cherikas Albert.

The Opelousas Police Department is investigating the shooting and has asked for the public's help.
