Johnny Depp to Investigate Deaths of Biggie and Tupac in ‘Labyrinth’

Johnny Depp is getting the ball rolling early at TIFF this year: It was announced today that he will be starring in Labyrinth, an independent film about the detective who investigated the assassinations of hip-hop legends Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. Labyrinth is the latest project from the production company Good Films, who hopes to sell the title in Toronto this week.

According to a Screen Daily exclusive, Johnny Depp will play Russell Poole, a rising star in the LAPD who makes the grave mistake of accusing a fellow officer of having a hand in the death of Biggie Smalls. He was forced to resign from the department, but that didn’t stop him from becoming a private investigator — and also trying to crack Tupac Shakur’s murder case. Poole never solved the murders, but his work uncovered tons of corruption in the LAPD.

Labyrinth is based on the 2002 book of the same name written by Randall Sullivan, and Brad Furman (The Infiltrator), will helm the film adaptation. Depp seems to be leaning towards biopics more and more these days, his most recent roles including a turn as terrifying blue-contact-wearing mobster James “Whitey” Bulger in Black Mass and Donald Trump in Donald Trump’s The Art of the Deal: The Movie.
