Kendrick Lamar Has No Plans to Put Out an Album Right Now
It's been about a year-and-a-half since we've gotten a new Kendrick Lamar album, and unfortunately for fans of the Compton rapper, it looks like there's still some time to go.
Sitting down with the LA Times recently for a report that was published today (Dec. 17), K. Dot discussed his Golden Globes nomination alongside fellow TDE artist SZA for their Black Panther soundtrack contribution "All the Stars" before the conversation turned to new music. It was then that he confirmed he isn't currently working on a follow-up to his DAMN. album. While he denied any new album in the works, he did note that he's been "jotting down thoughts, ideas and questions." What kind of questions, though? “That’s personal.”
Adding more hope that there will be something sooner than later, K. Dot also said that he's been writing some long-form creative project — though he didn't confirm that he's referring to music. His team did say they'd be hitting the studio following the interview, though.
As for his thoughts on the Golden Globes nod? “It feels great. I’m not only representing myself, but I’m representing my people…people I’ve been familiar with since I was born.”
Though we haven't received a solo Kendrick album since 2017's DAMN., 2018 gave us his work on the Black Panther soundtrack, and it did not go unnoticed. The TDE rapper scored a total of eight nominations for the 2019 Grammy Awards for the effort—the most out of all hip-hop artists, including Best Rap Song, Best Song Written for Visual Media and Best Rap/Sung Performance.
