A familiar face with Acadiana ties is putting Lafayette Regional Airport back in the national conversation.

Lafayette native and CBS journalist David Begnaud recently went viral after sharing his experience choosing Lafayette over New Orleans while traveling. His reason was simple and instantly relatable to many travelers right now: TSA lines.

Begnaud said he initially planned to fly out of Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport but changed course after seeing thousands of passengers waiting in line.

Instead, he drove to Lafayette.

An Entirely Different Scene Than New Orleans

At MSY, long lines have recently frustrated travelers, with some reporting hours-long waits and even missed flights. The delays are tied to ongoing issues with TSA staffing during a partial government shutdown, where many agents have gone weeks without full pay.

Some workers have called in sick or left altogether, creating major bottlenecks at larger airports.

Meanwhile, Begnaud described Lafayette’s TSA line as a “ghost town.”

There were no passengers waiting.

After passing through security, he made a point to thank TSA agents multiple times, noting they were still showing up to work despite not being fully paid.

Why Lafayette Is Suddenly More Appealing

For years, many travelers from Acadiana made the drive to New Orleans for cheaper flights and more direct options. But that gap has narrowed significantly.

Flight prices are now often comparable, and the added stress of longer drives, parking, and TSA delays can quickly erase any perceived savings.

Lafayette may not offer as many direct destinations, but it does offer something travelers are valuing more than ever right now: predictability.

A Local Experience Many Are Noticing

Stories similar to Begnaud’s are becoming more common. Travelers flying out of Lafayette, even on busy travel days like Sundays, are reporting minimal wait times and a far less chaotic experience.

A relative sent me this picture after she showed up hours earlier than normal at the warning of our family members only to find this scene.

For many, that peace of mind is worth a connecting flight.

Travel Smart During Ongoing Delays

With TSA challenges continuing at larger airports, travelers may want to rethink their usual routines. Choosing a regional airport like Lafayette could save more than just time, it could save an entire trip.

As for returning flights, experiences may vary depending on the destination.

For now, Lafayette is proving that sometimes smaller really is better when it comes to travel.

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
