Lafayette Police have identified the victim in a deadly crash that shut down part of I-10 during peak drive time.

According to investigators, the victim has been identified as Elaine Austin of Lafayette. The crash happened on I-10 eastbound near the University Avenue exit and led to a full closure of lanes as crews responded to the scene.

Preliminary Investigation Reveals What Happened

Authorities say the preliminary investigation indicates Austin was traveling eastbound on I-10 with another vehicle following behind her.

At some point, Austin’s vehicle slowed down, causing the vehicle behind her to crash into the rear of her vehicle. The impact caused her vehicle to veer onto the University exit ramp, where it eventually came to a stop.

Officials have not yet released details on what caused the initial slowdown.

Other Driver And Passenger Hospitalized

Police say the driver and occupant of the second vehicle involved in the crash were transported to a local hospital.

Both individuals are currently listed in stable condition.

No additional information about their identities has been released at this time.

The Lafayette Police Traffic Unit continues to investigate the crash to determine all contributing factors.
