UPDATE 9/25/26: Second 18-Year-Old Arrested In Surrey Street Homicide

Lafayette Police have announced a second arrest in the investigation into the fatal shooting of 22-year-old Ephrim Rose, while also releasing new details about the alleged firearm transaction that preceded the shooting.

Police say Dawan Calais, 18, of Lafayette, has been arrested and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count of second-degree murder.

According to investigators, Calais and Rose had agreed to sell a firearm to Asher Cormier, 18, of Rayne, in exchange for cash. Police allege that during the transaction, Calais and Rose attempted to rob Cormier.

Investigators say Cormier then discharged a firearm toward Rose, resulting in the fatal shooting.

Cormier was previously arrested in connection with Rose's death and booked on one count of second-degree murder.

The shooting happened near a business in the 200 block of Surrey Street on the night of Sept. 14. Officers responding around 8:22 p.m. found Rose dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

Lafayette Police have not provided additional details explaining the specific basis for the second-degree murder charges against both Cormier and Calais. The department says the homicide investigation remains ongoing.

Lafayette Police say Monday night's shooting on Surrey Street is now being investigated as a homicide, and an 18-year-old Rayne man has been arrested on a second-degree murder charge.

Police identified the victim as 22-year-old Ephrim Rose of Lafayette. Officers responded to the 200 block of Surrey Street around 8:22 p.m. Monday and found Rose dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

According to investigators, the shooting happened near a business in the area as Rose was attempting to exchange items for money. Police say a disagreement occurred during the exchange and ultimately led to the shooting.

Asher Cormier, 18, of Rayne, was arrested in connection with Rose's death and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count of second-degree murder.
