Is it country? Is It rap? Regardless of what you label it, Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' is an undeniable smash.

About two weeks ago Lil Nas X was ripped off of Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart after his record 'Old Town Road' was deemed "not country enough" for the chart. Since then, his song has continued to explode with a new remix featuring Billy Ray Cyrus and a new home at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

According to the report from Billboard, Lil Nas X is the first artist since Cardi B (Boday Yellow, 2017) to hit No. 1 on their chart with their first record to enter the list. The confusion between lyrical content that would be found in most trap songs mixed with imagery and twang found in country music has brought the rap sub-genre of country trap to the forefront of many musical conversations.

Lil Nas X credits Young Thug for the movement.

I believe whenever you’re trying something new, it’s always going to get some kind of bad reception. For example, when rap started, or when rock and roll began. But with country trap, I in no way want to take credit for that. I believe Young Thug would be one of the biggest pioneers in that.

Regardless of what you think of the song, it's hard to dislike this kid. He's having fun—and clearly, a LOT of people are enjoying it. Check out Lil Nas X explain the lyrics behind his smash hit in his own words.
