Lil Wayne Sends Gifts to NFL Coach for Naming His Son After Him
Lil Wayne is no stranger to the sports world, but his latest crossover may surprise you. TMZ reports today (July 26) that Weezy recently sent San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan a stash of autographed merchandise, including signed copies of his album Tha Carter III, after Shanahan reportedly named his son after Lil Wayne.
Shanahan's son, who is named Carter, definitely draws some inspiration from Weezy's many albums of the same name. As ex-NFL quarterback Chris Simms, who played with Shanahan in college, explained on Bleacher Report in May, the Niners coach named his child after Wayne.
"He's named after Lil Wayne. Carter. That's why he's our favorite coach," Simms said. "[Kyle] was obsessed with Lil Wayne my early years in the NFL."
Along with the signed merch, Wayne also sent the Shanahan family a personal message of appreciation. All in a day's work for the rap game's most decorated sports commentator.
Tunechi has guested on multiple ESPN programs, collaborated with FOX's NFL broadcast and dedicated mixtape interludes to discussing SportsCenter. He also played a role in launching Young Money's budding sports agency, although it's unclear whether he remains involved in the venture after being released from his Cash Money recording contract in June.
Shanahan, for his part, appears to be a dedicated hip-hop fan. You can view a photo of the coach posing with 50 Cent below, where you'll also find pictures of the family's signed Weezy merch.
