A quarter of Louisianans have received at least one vaccine dose so far, good for only 40th in the country per capita. To address this the Louisiana Department of Health is launching the Bring Back Louisiana Campaign.

State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter said they’ll use tracking data to figure out where mass vaccination events are needed most.

“This is how we are going to connect vaccine to every corner of the state, particularly corners that need it most by virtue of social vulnerability, or by virtue of not having enough people vaccinated,” said Kanter.

As of Thursday’s update, the New Orleans region leads the state in vaccine series completion at a nearly 17 percent vaccination rate while the Lake Charles and central Louisiana regions lag behind at roughly ten percent each. Just over 1.1 million Louisianans have received at least one vaccine dose.

Kanter said Bring Back Louisiana is a novel campaign and something the state is leading the nation on.

“It is marrying direct outreach, both canvassing and phone calls, with local community-based organizations with targeted vaccine events,” said Kanter.

The Bring Back Louisiana campaign will begin next week with nine pilot sites in parishes across the state. The campaign launches fully the week after.
