Louisiana Woman Comes Within One Spot Of Making Miss America History

Miss Louisiana 2026 Shelby Bordelon finished as first runner-up in the Miss America competition in West Palm Beach, Florida, capping an impressive national run for the Iberville Parish native.

Regan Hutsell of Texas was crowned Miss America 2027. Bordelon's first runner-up finish meant Louisiana narrowly missed a milestone the state has been chasing for decades: its first Miss America crown.

Shelby Bordelon Represents Louisiana On National Stage

Bordelon is from Sunshine, Louisiana, in Iberville Parish, and is a graduate of Southeastern Louisiana University. She is currently pursuing graduate studies at Southeastern.

Her journey to Miss America began with an impressive performance at the Miss Louisiana competition in Monroe, where she was crowned Miss Louisiana 2026 in June.

Bordelon carried that momentum onto the national stage, where she emerged from a field representing states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico to ultimately finish second overall.

Her first runner-up finish also earned her a $10,000 scholarship, according to WBRZ. 

Miss Louisiana Had Already Won Preliminary Honors

Before Sunday's final competition, Bordelon had already given Louisiana something to celebrate.

She was one of three contestants selected for the Portia & Scarlett Preliminary Evening Gown Award. The honor came with a $3,000 scholarship.

The achievement added to a growing list of scholarships Bordelon has earned through pageant competitions while pursuing her education.

Bordelon's Mission Goes Beyond The Crown

Bordelon has also used her platform to advocate against impaired driving through Claire's Promise, a nonprofit she founded in honor of her lifelong friend Claire Zeller, who was killed by an impaired driver in 2024.

The initiative focuses on impaired-driving prevention and victim advocacy, giving Bordelon's Miss Louisiana platform a deeply personal purpose.
