While protecting her children, a Louisiana woman shot and killed an intruder.

According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, the woman shot the home intruder after he forced his way into her home in Hammond as she was trying to protect her two children.

Shot to death was Robert Rheams, 51.

Rheams forced his way into the woman's home while armed with a shovel and a tire iron.

He reportedly was out on parole after serving around two decades in prison for armed robbery. He was also suspected of being a part of a carjacking just hours prior to the shooting.

During the incident, a physical altercation took place between Rheams and the homeowner which ultimately led to Rheams being shot by the homeowner. Rheams was later pronounced deceased on scene by the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner's Office.

Though the woman wasn't arrested in the shooting, the incident is being reviewed by the District Attorney's Office.
