Macklemore Shares Heartfelt Post About Addiction After Mac Miller’s Death
The untimely death of Mac Miller on Sept. 7 took the hip-hop world by storm and led to an outpouring of love from his fellow rappers. Since his death, the tributes have continued and Saturday (Sept. 8), Macklemore shared a heartfelt message on Instagram about addiction and the Pittsburgh rapper's death.
Macklemore, who has battled with addiction in the past, praised Miller in the beginning of his post, calling the rapper a genuine person with a brilliant sense of humor. "A true artist. Your spirit is what impressed me the most. The energy you brought to any space you were in. Contagious," the Seattle artist wrote.
The "These Days" rapper then opened up about his relationship with Mac, revealing Miller had helped him during his struggles. "You reached out to me at times when others didn’t. You were human. And we shared the same disease. A disease that is out to kill us, and when left untreated eventually will," he added.
In the second half of his message, Macklemore made a plea to his fans battling addiction to seek help and tell someone what is going on. "Don’t be a secret. Go to a 12 step meeting. Introduce yourself and you’ll be greeted with love and understanding from people that are fighting the same battle. Surrender," the rapper continued.
The 26-year-old Miller was found dead after an apparent overdose on Sept. 7 in his San Fernando Valley home in California. While drugs are believed to be the cause of the rapper's death, police say they didn't find any evidence of significant drug use at his home. Although a small amount of "white powder" was found, local authorities believe Miller's home was swept clean of any evidence of drugs before they arrived.
Macklemore himself knows the struggles off addiction, having overcome a drug and alcohol problem in 2008 after entering himself into rehab. The rapper also discussed his addiction in the 2016 documentary, Prescription For Change: Ending America’s Opioid Crisis.
