Multimillion-Dollar Bond Set for Mamou Mardi Gras Shooting Suspect on Charges in Multiple Parishes
MAMOU, La. — A bond of $5.2 million has been set for 19-year-old Trae'land Ty'rell Castille, the man accused of opening fire during the Mamou Mardi Gras street dance earlier this month. Castille, who is facing charges in both Evangeline and St. Martin parishes, was booked into the Evangeline Parish Jail earlier this week on March 17 following his extradition from Texas.
The shooting, which took place on Mardi Gras Day (March 4), resulted in the deaths of two people and left 12 others injured. Castille was arrested in Montgomery County, Texas, on March 8 and later transferred to Louisiana, where he now faces multiple felony charges. His charges include one count each of first-degree murder and second-degree murder, as well as illegal carrying of a firearm at a parade with a weapon used in a crime of violence and reckless discharge of a firearm at a parade or demonstration.
Before being booked in Evangeline Parish, Castille was held in St. Martin Parish, where he faces additional charges stemming from an unrelated January 7 drive-by shooting, according to KATC. That incident, which occurred in St. Martin Parish, did not result in any reported injuries but led to charges of aggravated criminal damage to property and aggravated assault with a firearm.

The Mamou shooting has left our local community in heartbreak and raised concerns about violence as well as safety protocol at local celebrations.
