Louisiana State Police report that a 21-year-old man lost his life after his vehicle collided with a horse early Sunday morning in Tangipahoa Parish.

The driver, Javonte Johnson, was traveling down Louisiana Highway 1040 when he hit the horse in the road.

Even though than man tried to avoid hitting the animal, his car did collide with it, and the man died as a result of his injuries.

Johnson's car ended up on its roof in a ditch.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was driving a 2011 Ford Fiesta eastbound on the highway when he encountered the dark colored horse in the eastbound lane.

State Police officials say Johnson was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Routine toxicology tests are pending.
