When I caught the first whiff of my newly opened Michael Jordan cologne, it was like watching Superman bleed.

I remember it like it was yesterday. I was a 15-year-old kid who wanted nothing more than to smell like a champion; specifically, the champion that was Michael Jordan.

It was Christmas morning and the year was 1996. Space Jam had just come out a month earlier and Michael Jordan was on his second term in NBA after giving everyone in the league a chance to win for a few years after an early retirement.

Basically, Jordan could do no wrong—until I unwrapped the gift that nearly ruined Christmas.

I didn't want my parents to feel like I didn't appreciate the gift; after all, I was the one who begged them to get me the Michael Jordan cologne, but it really stunk.

Keep in mind, the internet as we know it was still in a premature infant phase that didn't have the luxuries we now know as Yelp, Amazon, or any other type of website that allowed for consumer reviews or forewarning that this cologne smelled like crap.

The best way to describe my disappointment would be to quote Scott Prather from the video above,

What Michael Jordan was to the game of basketball, this cologne was the exact opposite in the fragrance world.

Since this was the year 1996, and returning ANYTHING was an act of Congress, I just ended up re-gifting it to my dad a few months later in the summer.

But from that day on, my perfect view of Michael Jordan would forever be tarnished.
