MIMS might be best known in the music industry for his major hit record, "This Is Why I'm Hot" from 2007, but the rapper is doing major things in the tech industry in present time, following in the footsteps of other big names in hip-hop. Now, the multi-platinum entertainer has an app called RecordGram, which just won the top spot at TechCrunch Disrupt’s 2017 Start-Up Battlefield competition.

The former hitmaker teamed up with producer Winston "DJ Blackout" Thomas and music executive and artist manager Erik Mendelson to launch their award-winning app, which is set up as a mobile music studio that lets users "collaborate original songs between artists and music producers from the palm of their hands." Users can lease original instrumentals from the app's affordable marketplace to create their own music, which they can instantly share across their social media platforms.

During the competition, RecordGram competed against 19 other start-up companies in front of a panel of tech experts and venture capitalists. Reports say that MIMS' particular app is the first music-based app and minority owned start-up to win the coveted award in the tech industry.

MIMS described the importance of the app in a digital space in a previous statement that detailed the launch of the app.

“RecordGram is going to be a market differentiator for companies like Apple, Spotify, Google and Microsoft who are all competing in the music space and with original content creation strategy,” MIMS stated.

Congratulations to the rapper and his team for winning the prestigious tech award.
