Lafayette Residents: Here’s Everything You Need to Know About Your New Trash Cans
With new waste carts being delivered to households, some Lafayette residents have been expressing confusion and concerns over the transition from Republic Services to Acadiana Waste Services (AWS).
When to Use the New Carts:
First and foremost, residents should note that AWS will not begin waste collection until October 30. Until then, the new AWS carts should not be used. Any waste left curbside in an AWS cart will not be picked up by Republic Services.
Queries on Additional Carts:
There has been some confusion amongst residents who had two garbage carts with Republic Services but did not receive two from AWS. In line with communications starting from January 2023, residents were required to request a second garbage cart and recycling cart through AWS. The cutoff for these requests was May 31, 2023, ensuring that AWS could plan and deliver the carts before the October 30 start date.
While residents can still request an additional garbage cart, there is a one-time rental fee of $90. Recycling carts can be requested at no cost. However, these orders will not be delivered by the AWS start date. To make a request, residents can visit www.acadianawaste.com/recycling-service/ or call 337-205-7710.
Returning the Old Carts:
Concerning the ownership of the older, second Republic Services cart, it's important to clarify that even if residents paid a fee for these, it was a rental fee. The carts are still owned by Republic Services and need to be returned. AWS will not service any carts from Republic Services. The terms will be the same for any additional cart requested through AWS.
Residents Voice Their Opinions:
The switch has seen a mixture of reactions from the residents.
Some residents took to social media to express their delight, saying, “Adulthood is gettin excited because your new Deadpool edition City trash can is dope,” while others were less enthusiastic, lamenting issues like lids that don’t close properly and the $90 fee for a second cart.
Lafayette Consolidated Government urges residents with any further questions to contact Acadiana Waste Services directly.
