The old parking meters in downtown Lafayette may soon be a thing of the past.

KATC reports that more modern parking meters, that allow you to pay to park with your debit card, are being tested in downtown Lafayette.

Currently, the only way to pay to park in and around downtown Lafayette is with coins. Soon you may be able to use your debit card to pay to park---like in most major cities around the country.

The new test meters are already visible near Pop's Poboys on Jefferson Street. The city-parish council recently voted to upgrade the parking meters in the downtown Lafayette district.

The new solar-powered meters will allow the city to monitor availability and demand. Thus, rates may vary to park based on the city's findings.

New meters will more visible in downtown Lafayette starting next week.
