Opelousas Police Address Viral Gang War Rumors After Recent Shootings
Rumors of a "gang war" in Opelousas have been spreading rapidly online, prompting concern across Acadiana. Now, Opelousas Police are responding directly, saying investigators have found no credible evidence of organized retaliatory violence or any broader threat to the community.
The Opelousas Police Department is attempting to calm growing fears after social media rumors claiming a "gang war" is expected to erupt in the city began circulating widely across Acadiana.
In a public statement released Thursday, Opelousas Police said they are aware of the online speculation but stressed that investigators have not received any credible information suggesting organized or coordinated retaliatory violence targeting Opelousas or the general public.
Police Say No Evidence Supports Viral Claims
According to OPD, investigators believe Tuesday's violent incident stemmed from a specific dispute between individuals rather than any broader gang-related conflict.
Authorities acknowledged that some of the people connected to Tuesday's case have ties to Opelousas. However, investigators say those individuals also have connections throughout multiple Acadiana-area jurisdictions and there is no evidence indicating Opelousas itself is being targeted.
Police further stated that the location of Tuesday's incident appears to be connected to the circumstances surrounding the individuals involved, not because of any organized activity centered within the city.
Recent Shootings Not Connected, Investigators Say
The department also addressed concerns that several recent shootings in Opelousas may be linked.
According to investigators, no confirmed connection has been established between the recent acts of violence that have occurred within city limits. Each case remains under investigation independently, with detectives evaluating evidence and information specific to each incident.
That clarification comes as residents have increasingly questioned whether a pattern exists following multiple high-profile incidents in recent weeks.

Officials Urge Public To Ignore Rumors
Police say unverified social media posts, screenshots, and forwarded messages have fueled unnecessary panic and confusion throughout the community.
While authorities acknowledge that isolated acts of violence can occur in any criminal investigation, OPD says it has not received credible intelligence indicating any imminent gang-related retaliation or organized threat connected to Tuesday's incident.
The department says investigators remain focused on identifying and apprehending those responsible for violent crimes while continuing to monitor any credible public safety concerns.
Police Encourage Residents To Rely On Official Sources
Chief Graig "Twin" LeBlanc and the Opelousas Police Department are urging residents to rely on information released directly by law enforcement agencies rather than online speculation.
Anyone with credible information related to criminal activity is encouraged to contact the Opelousas Police Department at (337) 948-2500.
