As a landmark Louisiana's capitol building is very unique. It's not the traditional rotunda we usually think of when describing a capitol building. Our capitol building is 34 stories tall and is the tallest building in Baton Rouge. In fact, the capitol building is the seventh tallest building in the state.

It's also a health hazard.

You're probably thinking that all of that bad government that goes on inside the capitol's walls are the reason the building is a health hazard. While legislators and their scatterbrained ideas and unique interpretations of the law and the needs of the people can make you sick, the health hazard we are speaking of comes from above.

If you've visited the capitol building then you know the front door is closed. It's not that legislators are attempting to hide from us, it's the fact that mortar from the art deco building could fall on visitors if they use that entrance. Falling rocks from several stories high could really put a damper on your visit if you know what I mean.

WBRZ TV in Baton Rouge is reporting that a covered walkway to protect visitors and employees from falling debris is should be completed by the end of the year. Should the state opt to repair the building completely one estimate suggests that it will take $80 million to finish the project.

Workers have already been working of refurbishing some of the building. The past several months work crews have been working on restoring the front of the building. However, their efforts have only been up to the sixth floor of the 34 story building.
