Rappers’ Mug Shots in Fake News Stories Causes Hip-Hop Fans to Start Trolling

While President Donald Trump is busy claiming that legitimate news outlets are “fake news,” actual fake news is flourishing online and profiting off gullible readers. Social media services like Facebook have been a major hub for the proliferation of these fake news stories, which are now using rappers’ mug shots.

Breitbart Insider, a parody of the right-wing outlet Breitbart, has been running fake stories with the mug shots of rappers, including DMX, Tyga and Rick Ross. Buzzfeed collected some of the madness, which has been mocked online via comments and social media.

The DMX story claims he is a Somali immigrant that was arrested on six counts of sexual battery. Despite the tale’s complete fabrication, it has racked up over 57,000 Facebook engagements.

The ridiculousness of the piece has led to an abundance of DMX-related comments on the article’s page. People have also been sharing the article on Twitter with their own DMX joke or pun.

The DMX piece barely holds a candle to the article featuring Tyga. The story bills Tyga as a “Moslem teenager” who planned to blow up a synagogue and frame the alt-right movement. The misspelling of Muslim and use of Tyga’s image are just taste of what Breitbart Insider does. One of the few rappers correctly identified is Rick Ross, who the site claims was arrested for trying to assassinate Donald Trump.

In real news, DMX is about to join his Ruff Ryders brethren for a reunion show. Tyga will be part of his own big show as he and the G.O.O.D. Music roster are headlining the 2017 Fyre Festival. As for Rick Ross, he is set to release his new album Rather You Than Me next week.
