T La Rock is a name that true hip-hop historians will know, but his story is one that all should learn. The rap legend's story will reportedly be the center of a new film being made by Russell Simmons and 20th Century Fox.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the movie is set to be based around Joshuah Bearman’s recently published GQ article, "The Man Who Forgot He Was a Rap Legend," which covers the journey of the hip-hop pioneer. Rock is best known as being the first artist signed to Def Jam Records, having seen peak success with songs like "It's Yours" before he was nearly fatally beaten, leaving him in a coma. The film will reportedly dive into his rehabilitation experiences at a Jewish care facility in Brooklyn, New York.

Simmons is teaming up to produce the movie with Jake Stein under their DEF Pictures banner, Mike Medavoy with his Phoenix Pictures and Benjamin Anderson. The Def Jam founder discusses signing on to create the film in a statement, remarking on T La Rock's legacy.

“T La Rock has always been an inspiration to me and many in the hip hop community,” Russell says.. “This is a man who was literally beaten to within an inch of his life at the height of his fame. How he regained his memory and recovered from his coma while being cared for and surrounded by the most unlikely group of therapists and friends is the kind of hope-filled and hopeful true story that will appeal to everyone, whether you love rap music or not.”

We'll keep you updated on what more is in store for the film about T La Rock.
