Saints Player Sentenced to 6 Months in Jail

New Orleans Saints rookie defensive end Carl Granderson was sentenced to six months in jail Thursday after a judge rejected the terms of his plea agreement in an alleged 2018 sexual assault case.

Court documents show that the former University of Wyoming star reached a plea deal with prosecutors in a sexual assault case.

The 22-year-old Granderson pleaded no contest to one count of sexual battery and one count of unlawful contact. He previously pleaded not guilty.

His attorney and prosecutors agreed to terms in the pleas, which included one year of unsupervised probation and a mental health evaluation. A district court judge, however, rejected the deal.

Granderson was immediately ordered to begin serving the six-month jail sentence in Albany County, Wyoming.

This jail term stems from two female university students saying that Granderson touched them sexually while they slept at his Laramie apartment in 2018.

In regards to football, Granderson was an undrafted free agent signee by the Saints in April. He was expected to compete for a roster spot, but the jail sentence means he will miss training camp, preseason action and the regular season.

Saints coach Sean Payton explained back in May why the team pursued Granderson even though he had legal issues.

“We felt real comfortable with everything we knew, and so far he’s done a good job here," Payton said after the second day of Saints rookie minicamp.
