Showers & Storms Expected to Break Louisiana Heatwave Today

Louisiana residents have been dealing with excessive heat, heat advisories, heat watches, heat warnings, and probably some heat rashes over the past two weeks but that is now in the past. The heatwave of 2023 has officially been broken, or it should be broken by the time today is over.

As of early this morning there a no heat advisories or warnings or watches posted for anywhere in the state of Louisiana. It seems as if some portion of the state has been under an advisory because of the heat for at least the last two weeks and now as we are on the cusp of the July 4th holiday it appears as if we will be going back to a more typical summertime pattern. 

Now that doesn't mean it won't be hot across the state. In fact, temperatures will still reach the 90s this afternoon. However, it will be the lower 90s instead of the upper 90s or triple-digits the area has seen for the past week or so. Here's how Independence Day shapes up.

As you can see the afternoon hours will still generate heat indices that reach into the triple-digits. But the actual air temperatures won't be nearly as hot. The forecast for the remainder of the holiday week does include a decent threat of showers all the way through Saturday.

We should note that even though rain chances of 60% or 70% will be common later in the week it won't mean a washout. Most of the showers and storms will fire up in the afternoon and taper off when the sun goes down. So, if you have outside plans just keep an eye on the sky and be ready to move if threatening weather approaches.

Now the bad news, the heat won't be going away.

As you can see in the graphic provided by the National Weather Service temperatures above normal are expected across much of Louisiana for the latter part of July and into August. Let's just hope these extra hot temperatures won't excite the Gulf of Mexico too much as we start to move into the heart of hurricane season.
