As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, many of us are scrambling to line out plans for the celebratory feast that will keep friends and family in attendance safe from COVID-19. This is no easy task, especially with the ever-changing advice from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) concerning our yearly get together to give thanks.
The latest on how to get your Thanksgiving on safely from the CDC was released today, and surprisingly, officials are not discouraging families from gathering. The new advice is asking Americans to do so with these safety precautions in place.
- Wear a mask, stay six feet away from people you don't live with, and wash and/or sanitize your hands frequently.
- If possible, bring your own food, utensils, and drinks with you.
- Avoid going in and out of the kitchen (just like your grandmother has been saying for years), and use disposable items like paper plates, plastic utensils, and storage containers.
- If you can, limit the number of guests and host the dinner outside where socially distancing will be much easier.
- If sharing food, have one person serve food.
- Clean and disinfect high-use areas frequently.
There are more suggestions from the CDC to study if you are still planning on a big family meal. See them all here. If this isn't working for you, you can always video conference the family for a "Zooms-Giving."
Personally, we are going to take advantage of the last option.
