You reap what you sow and the team behind the Tupac Shakur biopic All Eyez on Me put in the right amount of work for the good news they received today. After a Thursday night premiere of the film, it brought in $3.1 million at 2,000 theaters in North America. It was released on what would have been Tupac's 46th birthday.

The film claimed the number one spot at the box office for the night with a few other movie previews. All Eyez on Me beat out Cars 3, which made $2.8 million, 47 Meters Down, which made $735,000, and Rough Night, which made $700,000. The film is on track to make $17-22 million at 2,471 theaters for the rest of the weekend. As a comparison, Straight Outta Compton made $4.96 million its opening Thursday preview night.

XXL spoke to Demetrius Shipp Jr. who plays Tupac in the film over a year ago and he hoped that the movie would provide a more complete picture of the legendary rapper and icon. "Why I took on this role is to give people a side of him that they never had," he said. "To really get a great understanding of him and his life, and why things ended up the way they did."
