A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on the 1400 block of SW Evangeline Thruway in Lafayette early Friday morning. The Lafayette Police Department was called to the scene at approximately 12:50 am.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that the pedestrian, later identified as 63-year-old Anthony Derouen of Lafayette, had already succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision. The scene was immediately secured, and traffic investigators were called to begin a detailed investigation.

Initial findings suggest that the vehicle involved, referred to as vehicle #1, was traveling southbound in the outside lane of SW Evangeline Tw. Mr. Derouen was reportedly walking in the middle of the roadway when he was struck. The circumstances that led to him being in the road at that time are still under investigation.

The driver of vehicle #1 was taken to the Lafayette Police Department where she cooperated fully, providing a voluntary breath sample, which showed no alcohol present (0.000g%BAC). She has not been charged as the investigation continues.

The Lafayette Police Department’s Traffic Unit is actively investigating the incident to determine the full sequence of events and any contributing factors.

We will update this story if more information becomes available.
