Less than 1% of the people who do get infected with the West Nile virus develop severe symptoms or complications, still you should take precautions to avoid mosquitoes.

Avoid letting water collect in and around your yard, as water is often found as a haven for mosquitoes. In addition to eliminating water sources for the pests, you should always wear mosquito repellent while out in the yard during the summer months.

The Jennings Daily News reports, "That Calcasieu Parish Mosquito Control had received confirmation from the Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Baton Rouge that four of their parish's mosquito pools, collections of mosquitoes from different areas in the parish, have tested positive for the West Nile Virus."

According to the MayoClinic, here are some =common signs and symptoms of the virus:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Body aches
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Skin rash

The clinic also states on their website, "Mild symptoms of West Nile fever usually resolve on their own. Seek medical attention right away if you have signs or symptoms of serious infection, such as severe headaches, a stiff neck, disorientation or confusion. A serious infection generally needs hospitalization."
