If you are looking for some adventure this summer that the whole family can enjoy, you don't have far to go. We are lucky to have an amazing animal preserve not too far from Acadiana. The Barn Hill Preserve is tucked away in the small community of Ethel, Louisiana, just north of Baton Rouge. Now, I'm familiar with this area because my family heads there every year to pick blueberries at Berry Sweet Orchards. But I never knew about this cool sanctuary that offers animal encounters and programs year round.

Barn Hill Preserve has two locations in the US - one in Ethel, and one in Delaware. And the one here in Louisiana is home to many exotic animals, as well as animals that are native to the southern United States. The Preserve offers hands on activities, and educational programs with animals that include baby anteaters, kangaroos, camels, lynx, ostriches and owls. You can also get up close and personal with a petting zoo on the property. According to Only in Louisiana, Barn Hill is also home to one of the largest free-flying macaw rescues in the country.

Otter swims seem to be a highlight at the Preserve, and they last for about an hour. Private tours, walking tours, field trips, and other kids activities are also available for some family fun. They also have mobile programs. If you go, make sure you send us some photos of your unique animal experiences!
