As Memorial Day is fast approaching, law enforcement agencies across the country are gearing up for one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

While we think of the holidays - like Memorial Day - as times to get away for a vacation or to visit family, police officers know that these times of the year also provide increased opportunities for crashes. And, not wearing a seat belt, is just one of the ways a crash can turn deadly.

“Every day, unbuckled motorists are losing their lives in motor vehicle crashes,” says Breaux Bridge Police Chief Rollie Cantu in a press release. “As we approach Memorial Day weekend and the summer vacation season, we want to make sure people are doing the one thing that can save them in a crash, buckling up.”

Chief Cantu has the sobering stats to prove that not wearing a seat belt can indeed prove to be a fatal decision.

2017 Stats

  • 54% of drivers killed in Louisiana were not wearing safety belts
  • 63% of passengers killed were not restrained
  • 50% of children below age 6 killed in crashes were not buckled properly in child seats.

Click It or Ticket Campaign

Beginning today and lasting until June 6th, Breaux Bridge Police are participating in the Click It or Ticket campaign as law enforcement agencies across the country are stepping up enforcement of the seat belt law.

“If you ask the family members of those unrestrained people who were killed in crashes, they’ll tell you—they wished their loved ones had buckled up,” adds Chief Cantu. “The bottom line is that seat belts save lives. If these enforcement crackdowns get people’s attention, and get them to buckle up, then we’ve done our job.”

Chief Cantu says his officers will be enforcement with zero tolerance.
