A gunman opened fire on a crowd of a few hundred people Sunday evening at the Gilroy Garlic Festival.

Just as the rock band TinMan was finishing their set at the North California food festival gunfire began to ring out. Nearby vendors scattered and families took flight. TinMan singer Christian Swain told CNN he could "smell the gunpowder."

We ran off the stage (and) we crawled underneath it. We could smell the gunpowder.

Law enforcement officials report that three people were killed and 11 others were injured. Among those killed was a 6-year-old boy. Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee confirmed that the shooter was also killed.

The chief also credited law enforcement for saving more lives due to the heavy presence at the festival.

We had many, many officers in the park at the time this occurred ... which accounts for a very, very quick response time.

Area hospitals treated victims with injuries ranging from "fair to serious." According to multiple eyewitnesses, a second shooter could have been involved but authorities have yet to find or identify anyone involved beyond the shooter that was killed at the scene.

According to the chief, a manhunt for that alleged second suspect is currently underway.
