If 15 years ago I told you that compact discs, CDs, would one day be a a thing of the past, what would you have told me? Well, that day has come. I am here today to tell you that CDs will soon be a thing of the past. How soon, how about as soon as next year? The major record labels are planning to kill off the CD format by the end of next year to make way for digital downloads only. Yes, record labels will soon be making room for their digital downloads, and with that will come the death of compact discs.

The notion is that, by the end of 2012, the majors will focus entirely on downloads. The only CDs that will go on sale through 2013 and beyond will be special editions and albums from the biggest artists. Still, the large sections of CDs you see at Wal-Mart, Target, and Best Buy will soon be replaced with other products. As record labels continue to feel the pinch because of illegal downloads, more and more companies see eliminating CDs as away to cut expenses and save money in the process.

Now we ask, will the existence of CDs be TOTALLY wiped out...probably not. However, I do foresee few and fewer on the shelves at stores soon. However, like vinyl, CDs may one day make a big come back. The only thing, CD players will have to become cool again and the digital media will have to no longer be so accessible. Perhaps the day will come again when consumers rather have something tangible in their possession rather than possess it digitally. That is the only hope CDs have in my opinion.
