The college football season is underway. Week one was mostly a humdrum affair, with Notre Dame and TCU suffering the biggest upsets among ranked teams. Here’s a complete look at how the top 25 did:

#1 Oklahoma 47, Tulsa 14

Junior walk-on RB Dominique Whaley rushed for 131 yards and four touchdowns in the top-ranked Sooners’ season opener. Any chance Tulsa had in the game vanished earlier in the week when WR/KR Damaris Johnson, the NCAA career record-holder for all-purpose yardage, was suspended following his arrest on felony embezzlement charges. The Sooners now have a bye week before a week three showdown with top 10 power Florida State.

#2 Alabama 48, Kent State 7

Crimson Tide RB Trent Richardson only had 13 carries for 37 yards, but made them count with three touchdowns in Alabama’s first win of the year.

#4 LSU 40, #3 Oregon 27

In the weekend’s most enticing showdown, the Oregon Ducks simply made too many mistakes to give themselves a chance in a 40-27 loss to LSU. Oregon had 12 penalties to go along with four turnovers, which turned into 20 points for the Bayou Bengals. LSU only led by three at half, but the game turned in the 3rd quarter when Oregon freshman RB De’Anthony Thomas fumbled on consecutive touches (a run and a kickoff return), resulting in 14 LSU points in less than  three-and-a-half minutes. LSU QB Jarrett Lee, filling in for the suspended Jordan Jefferson, didn’t have huge numbers (10-for-22 for 98 yards and one TD) but managed the game well and didn’t turn the ball over. The Tigers have now won 34 consecutive non-conference games, including 23 under seventh-year coach Les Miles.

#5 Boise State 35, #19 Georgia 21

Boise State got their first ever win over an SEC team with a 35-21 victory over Georgia at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. Georgia started the scoring with an 80-yard touchdown on an end-around to Brandon Boykin, but Boise State scored the next 28 points to take a lead they would never relinquish. Broncos QB Kellen Moore finished 28-for-34 for 261 yards and three touchdowns, while the Boise State defense did its part by sacking Georgia QB Aaron Murray six times. Things don’t get much easier for the Bulldogs, who take on defending SEC East champion South Carolina next week.

#6 Florida State 34, Louisiana-Monroe 0

The Seminoles’ defense was stifling, holding ULM to just 191 total yards and never allowing them closer to scoring than the Florida State 28-yard line.

#7 Stanford 57, San Jose State 3

Stanford QB Andrew Luck kicked off his Heisman campaign with an easy win, throwing two touchdowns and rushing for another before sitting out the 4th quarter.

#8 Texas A&M 46, Southern Methodist 14

Beginning what will likely be their last season in the Big 12, Texas A&M routed the Mustangs, who are already lobbying to replace them in the conference. Aggies QB Ryan Tannehill was an efficient 21-for-26 for 246 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while running backs Cyrus Gray and Christine Michael ran up 217 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

#9 Oklahoma State 61, Louisiana-Lafayette 34

Although they were introducing a new offensive coordinator, Oklahoma State’s offense didn’t miss a beat, rolling up 666 total yards. Senior QB Brandon Weeden did throw 3 interceptions, but made up for them with 388 yards and 3 touchdowns through the air.

#10 Nebraska 40, Chattanooga 7

Huskers QB Taylor Martinez showed no signs of the ankle injury that hobbled him most of last season, rushing for 135 yards and three touchdowns in three quarters of play.

#11 Wisconsin 51, Nevada-Las Vegas 17

New Wisconsin QB Russell Wilson lived up to the hype, as the Badgers pounded UNLV Thursday night.  The transfer from North Carolina State made an immediate impact for Wisconsin, going 10-for-13 for 255 yards and a pair of touchdowns in less than three quarters of play. He also rushed for 62 yards and another touchdown. Running back Monte Ball was equally impressive, rushing and receiving for a combined 140 yards and four TDs (his fourth regular season game in a row with at least three TDs).

#12 South Carolina 56, East Carolina 37

ECU jumped out to an early 17-0 lead, but QB Stephen Garcia came off the bench to overcome four USC turnovers and rally the Gamecocks to a comfortable victory.

#13 Virginia Tech 66, Appalachian State 13

The Hokies made sure there would be no repeat of last year’s season opening loss to an FCS opponent, scoring on seven of their first nine possessions and jumping out to a 52-0 lead less than three minutes into the 3rd quarter.

Baylor 50, #14 TCU 48

TCU probably won’t crash the BCS party again this year after dropping their season opener to Baylor. The Horned Frogs, who came into the game carrying an FBS-best 25-game regular season winning streak and boasting one of the nation’s best defenses last year, had no answer for Baylor QB Robert Griffin III, who threw for 359 yards and five touchdowns. TCU trailed 47-23 going into the fourth quarter, before launching a furious comeback with 25 unanswered points to take a 48-47 lead with 4:27 to go. But Griffin led the Bears on an 11-play, 60-yard drive that ended in a 37-yard field goal with 1:04 left to seal the Baylor victory. The win was Baylor’s first over a ranked opponent since 2004.

#15 Arkansas 51, Missouri 7

Replacing the departed Ryan Mallett, new Razorbacks QB Tyler Wilson was only in the game for four possessions, but led scoring drives on all four while throwing for 260 yards and two touchdowns. The Razorbacks’ special teams also did damage, returning two punts for touchdowns.

South Florida 23, #16 Notre Dame 20

Lou Holtz won 100 games and a national championship in his 11 years as head coach at Notre Dame. But this week, it was son Skip Holtz’s turn to make a memory in South Bend. The first-year head coach led his South Florida Bulls to a 23-20 weather-delayed upset of the Fighting Irish. Notre Dame had twice as many yards as the Bulls (508 vs. 254), but turned the ball over five times, including a fumble that South Florida returned 96 yards for the game’s opening touchdown.

#17 Michigan State 28, Youngstown State 6

Spartans WR B.J. Cunningham tied MSU’s record for career receptions in the victory, catching nine balls for 129 yards and a touchdown.

#18 Ohio State 42, Akron 0

Despite breaking in a new head coach and playing without eight suspended players, the Buckeyes still had too much talent for Akron. The Zips managed just 90 total yards and five first downs, while giving up five sacks.

#20 Mississippi State 59, Memphis 14

Mississippi State’s offense exploded for several long plays in a route of Memphis. The Bulldogs rolled up 645 total yards and scored six touchdowns on plays of more than 20 yards.

#21 Missouri 17, Miami (OH) 6

The Tigers never seemed to find any rhythm in the game, going just three-for-13 on 3rd down conversions and being flagged nine times for 81 yards. But the RedHawks special teams couldn’t capitalize on Mizzou’s struggles, missing a 41-yard field goal and giving up a blocked PAT.

#22 Florida 41, Florida Atlantic 3

New head coach Will Muschamp got his first career win as the Gators rolled to an easy win over Florida Atlantic. The Florida defense was dominant, holding the Owls to just 137 total yards and forcing three-and-outs on FAU’s fist four possessions.

#23 Auburn 42, Utah State 38

The defending national champion Auburn Tigers needed two late touchdowns and a successful onside kick in less than two minutes to secure a win over the Utah State Aggies. The Tigers’ defense was ineffective most of the day, as Utah State rolled up 448 yards, dominated the time of possession and twice led by double digits. But the Auburn offense woke up just in time to save the game. Auburn QB Barrett Trotter (17-for-23 for 261 yards and three touchdowns) led the Tigers on a six-play, 65-yard drive to pull within three with just 2:07 left. Following a successful onside kick, the Tigers went on an eight-play, 56-yard drive capped off by Michael Dyer’s one-yard touchdown run with 30 seconds left to seal the victory. The win was Auburn’s ninth straight in games decided by eight points or less, the longest such active streak in the FBS.

#24 West Virginia 34, Marshall 13

New head coach Dana Holgorsen’s new offense wasn’t as high-octane as it can be, but showed definite signs of life as the Mountaineers rolled up 291 yards, including 249 in the air, and 34 points in just over three quarters of play. The game was called with 14:36 left in the fourth quarter due to severe storms in the area.

#25 Southern Cal 19, Minnesota 17

USC QB Matt Barkley completed a school-record 34 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns. But the Trojans couldn’t manage any points in the second half and needed an interception with just 53 seconds left to seal the victory.
