Ray Akins, a legendary Texas high school football coach and grandfather to Drew Brees, has passed away.

According to NOLA.com, Akins passed away early Tuesday morning in Texas. In addition to being one of the most winningest coaches in Texas high school football history, he was also the biggest the biggest influence on his grandson, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

Back in 2012, Brees talked about his grandfather's impact both on and off the field, especially during his formative years.

Just growing up and being around (football) with him, the values he instilled in me and the discipline. Some of my best memories as a kid are with him and my grandmother.

In addition to being a legendary football coach and a mentor to his grandson, Akins was a World War II veteran who served in the 1st Marine Division, fighting in the bloody invasion of Okinawa in 1945, this according to NOLA.com

The stadium lights at Ray Akins Wildcat Stadium were left on throughout the day on Tuesday to honor his legacy.

Akins was 92.
