The Food and Drug Administration has announced a nationwide dog food recall.

The dog food in question could be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes and was shipped to stores across the country.

The concern, though, is more than just sick pets: it's possible for humans to become sick from handling contaminated dog food. If you have any of the dog food described below, you are advised to discard it immediately. Make certain that you wear gloves when handling the dog food and wash your hands thoroughly after handling. Also, when disposing of the dog food, place it in a container or bag that will not easily be accessed by any humans or animals. Tie it tightly in a trash bag and place that bag into a waste receptacle with a lid.

If you have fed your dog any of the dog food listed below, monitor them closely for symptoms of Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. Those symptoms, according to the recall notification by the FDA, may include your pet being:

lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. - Food and Drug Administration

 

Even if your pet appears healthy, it could be infected with Salmonella and, in turn, infect family members. Pets can spread Salmonella through their saliva and feces.

If you have handled this pet food or think you may have come into contact with a pet that has consumed this pet food, monitor yourself for symptoms of Salmonella, which can include:

nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Food and Drug Administration

The dog food being recalled is produced by a company named Bravo Packing, Inc. The voluntary recall is being conducted due to test results on samples taken by the FDA.

The pet food you are being asked to discard is sold under the brand names "Performance Dog" and "Ground Beef". Sample labels can be seen below.

Again, if you have either of these dog foods in your home, your are encouraged to throw them away immediately, and to thoroughly wash your hands after handling. As of now, there are no reports of any illness or injury caused to pets or humans from this dog food. The recall is voluntary, and is being done out of an abundance of caution.
