Fireworks Spark Major Brush Fire On Beach Near Destin Bridge [VIDEO]
Okaloosa Island authorities confirm a brush fire on the beach near the Destin bridge Thursday night.
Firefighters and EMS responded to the blaze near the west jetty that reportedly burned almost two acres of Eglin Air Force Based land. The fire took "about an hour and 15 minutes to put out" as firefighters were still extinguishing hot spots after 10:30 p.m. last night.
Okaloosa Island Fire Chief Kevin Carvalho believes that fireworks detonated in the area may have sparked the blaze. Alan Myers of Destin also claims that malfunctioning fireworks from beachgoers were to blame, saying he was near the west jetty when the blaze began.
It started out relatively small and spread really quickly. I was upset. That’s natural habitat for animals that are indigenous to the area. Some folks just don’t respect that.
According to reports, there were no injuries.
