After a couple of hurricanes and what seems like a laundry list of other natural disasters, you'd think Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards would have the White House on speed-dial for emergency assistance.

To be honest, I don't know that he doesn't because Louisiana's Governor has once again reached out to the office of the President of the United States for a helping head in regards to our state's recent spate of frigid temperatures, ice, and snow.

Yesterday, Governor Edwards made an official request for a Presidential Emergency Declaration in a letter that was sent to President Joe Biden. The letter stated the urgency of the situation in Louisiana in regard to the winter weather. It even spotlighted the fatalities our state has seen as a result of ice, snow, and temperatures that are well below normal.

The Governor's office in the letter to President Biden specifically asked for federal assistance in the areas of commodities and supplies. He also asked for Emergency Protective measures under FEMA's Public Assistance program.

If approved and signed by the President the declaration would expedite the flow of federal money, services, and supplies into the state to aid in our recovery from this winter blast.

Meanwhile, Louisiana is still receiving federal assistance from both Hurricane Laura and Hurricane Delta from last year's Hurricane Season of 2020. Oh, there's also the pandemic that's been ongoing since last year about this time too. See what I mean about Governor Edwards having the White House on speed-dial?

Confidence is high that federal assistance in some form will be coming to Louisiana and in fact a large part of the nation as we seek to uncover ourselves from the ice and snow mess. If there is a light at the end of the tunnel temperatures by next week across much of Acadiana will be in the middle 70s and hurricane season is still three and half months away.
