Happy International Left Handers Day!
Today (August 13th) is International Left Handers Day. Twenty five percent of people are born left handed. There are, unfortunately, cultures where being left handed is sometimes regarded as undesirable. In fact, the word 'sinister' is Latin for left handed. Social conditioning, and cultural prejudices force many lefties to operate like right handed people. I've never understood this. In my view, it interferes with, thereby diminishing, a person's natural abilities.
People who are right brain dominant (left handed) are generally more creative, and imaginative than righties. We're also more adaptable. We don't have a choice. "Southpaws" live in a world that, for us, is totally backward and constructed to be as inconvenient as possible, yet we persevere.
Some of the most notable people in human history are, or were, left handed. The long distinguished list includes Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Babe Ruth, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Jimi Hendrix, and Acadiana native Ron Guidry, whose #49 has been retired by the 27 time World Series champion New York Yankees. If you're a leftie, you're in good company. Stand up and be proud!
