Many are using sandbags this weekend to protect their property as Tropical Storm Barry approaches the Louisiana coast, but are we stacking the bags correctly?

I'll be honest with you, I never knew that there was a correct way to stack sandbags. Yes, if you stack the bags properly, you have a much better chance in protecting your property by channelling water away from your entrances.

As you will see in the video below, you start the process by laying down a sheet of plastic, then you lay the sandbags down. The bags should NOT be filled to capacity. 

Next, put the bags parallel to the water flow, then you'll overlap the unfilled top part of the bag with another bag. Basically, you're staggering them.

What I learned in the video below is that the bags should not be tied and that the bags should be protected with a plastic sheet or tarp.
