Imagine hundreds of volunteers cleaning up the roadway starting on University Avenue near the University of Louisiana Lafayette and going all the way to the Interstate-10.

Well, you don't have to imagine as several groups are joining up this weekend for the UL Lafayette Big Event with the Office of Student Public Service and United Way.

Rob Kirkpatrick with Parish Proud joined Acadiana's Morning News to talk about the event they are participating in this Saturday, March 27. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and will feature volunteers all along the route picking up litter. He says they already have 600 volunteers signed up to participate in the event. If you would like to sign up, you can still do so by clicking here.

The University Avenue Exit off of Interstate Ten is one of the gateways into the city of Lafayette. The idea is to clean up the roadway all the way to the University to make it more visually appealing to people who come to our city. This is just one of many events that Parish Proud is taking part in. In fact, if you would like to have your own event to clean up an area, Parish Proud can help you with the resources you need to get that started. You can click here to find out more information.

Another project of Parish Proud is an initiative that has just begun this week called, Get Your Butts Off the Ground. Leaving behind cigarette butts is a major problem in our local communities. When they aren't deposited in the appropriate repository they end up lining our streets, junking up our parks, and flowing into the river. Here's a statistic shared by Parish Proud that might surprise you, Cigarette butts make up 38 percent of all collected litter, and it takes ten years for the filter of a cigarette to decompose. So, let's all take part in "Get Your Butts Off the Ground".
