
Some Very Interesting Facts You May Not Have Known About Crawfish
(KTDY) - It's no secret, people in Louisiana love crawfish, whether boiled or in a gravy, we can't get enough of them.
However, how much do you know about crawfish? Sure, you may know that they are only harvested a few months out of the year or that they live in the muddy waters, but there's so much to know about this southern favorite.
I was recently traveling through parts of St. Landry and Evangeline Parish, and while observing the many crawfish ponds in that area of the state, I asked myself, "Why don't crawfish escape the traps they enter?"
Well, when I got home, I went to YouTube to get a better understanding of the traps used to catch them, but what I found out about them was even more interesting. After learning why crawfish can't escape from the traps set in fields, I came across another video highlighting 10 interesting facts about the southern delicacy.

- The life expectancy of a drawfiish is 2-3 years, as long as it doesn't land in a trap
- They can climb trees (Have you ever seen a crawfish in a tree?)
- Crawfish communicate through their urine (Aren't you glad humans don't?)
- Their burrows are perfect hiding places for snakes
- Crawfish can only swim or walk backwards (Which is why they can't escape from traps that they may end up in)
- They make sounds by using their exoskeletons

- Crawfish date back MILLIONS of years, some burrows go back 100 MILLION years
- While underwater, crawfish can smell (Which can lead them to baited traps)
- They have excellent eyesight and can move their eyes independently of each other
- One species can grow up to 31 inches long (That sounds like a baby lobster to me)
- Crawfish can come in various colors (The blue crawfish, to me, is the most interesting)
- Like humans, crawfish will dance to catch the attention of potential mates
