Lafayette, Louisiana (KMDL) - One of this Summer's big blockbuster movies is the long awaited 3rd installment in the "28 Days Later" franchise.

This got me thinking...how well would the State of Louisiana fare in a zombie apocalypse?

By my judgement, we'd probably do pretty well..hopefully.

Could 28 Years Later Actually Happen?

"28 Years Later" is a newly released horror movie directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland.

It's the latest installment in the beloved post-apocalyptic "rage virus" franchise, following "28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks Later", and it hit theaters on June 20, 2025 .

But, could it actually happen?

I suppose anything is possible.

The "28 Days Later" franchise is based on a pathogen that spreads across the globe, very quickly anyone exposed to the virus into a violently aggressive, zombie-like being.

The closest real world comparison that we know of would be rabies.

The rabies virus causes aggression, confusion, and hydrophobia.

The rabies virus can't be spread person to person, and in no way can it spread as fast as the rage virus in the "28 Days Later" franchise does.

But, let's just pretend for a moment that a rage-like virus did exist?

How well would Louisiana make it through a rage filled zombie apocalypse, if at all?

Would Louisiana Survive A Zombie Apocalypse?

If the zombie apocalypse ever hits, there’s no better place to ride it out than South Louisiana, and there are no better survivors than Cajuns.

Don't believe? I'll prove it to you...

1. Cajuns Can Shoot, Trap, Cook, and Eat Anything - We know to hunt it, catch it, clean it, and cook it.

We're also really good at eating things other people won't. Cajuns know to use to every part of an animal making for a greater chance of survival over those who don't know how to do what we do.

2. We Have Swamps - South Louisiana's swamps are almost a perfect natural defense against hoards of zombies.

Alligators will take care of a good chunk of the roaming undead, even if they're fast ragers like in "28 Days Later".

The mud will help take care of the rest as they get stuck and sink. We know how to survive in the swamp, zombies don't.

3. Cajuns Can Make Anything - Did you know that Cajuns currently hold thousands of patents in the U.S. Patent office? Everything from medical devices, oil field equipment, various types of machinery, and much more.

The apocalypse will obviously come with endless problems to solve, and only problem solvers will survive. That's us.

4. Our Cajun French Language -  In any serious situation involving groups of people, communication can be a matter of life and death.

When it comes to a zombie apocalypse, survivors will be roaming and searching for resources. In many cases, survivors can be way more of a threat than zombies.

Being able to secretly communicate with each other in the presence of outsiders will be very valuable.

Speaking Cajun French will also be a way of knowing who we can and can't trust, for the most part.
