Police took a student into custody at a high school in Louisiana after they were alerted that the student had a handgun in their possession, while on campus.

WAFB reports that police took the student into custody on the campus at Live Oak Junior High School, on Wednesday morning, after school officials were alerted about the threat.

The school resource officer and other officers located the weapon and student within five minutes, and the student was removed from the rest of those on campus.

The Baton Rouge news station reports that the student never threatened anyone on campus, and once the campus was deemed secure, students were no longer under lockdown and they resumed their day.

Police are investigating the matter and once the investigation is complete and handed over to the school district, appropriate actions will be taken against the student who allegedly brought the gun to school.

Parents need to remind their kids that when they are aware of a potential threat on campus, they need to report it to school administrators or the assigned school resource officer.

In this case, whoever reported the gun being on campus may have helped avert a tragedy today at their school.
