Why Do People Try To Steal ATMs?

The majority of security stories about ATMs that you hear or read concern preventing them from being tampered with.

We often tell you about stories where someone has put a separate card reader over a legitimate reader at an ATM to steal your sensitive information. This is just one way in which people try to steal money.

In years past, we have written stories about the many attempts of people to steal ATMs. However, most criminals are unsuccessful in these endeavors, which begs the question, "Why do people keep trying?"

Are ATMs Heavy?

The weight of an ATM alone would deter most people from thinking they could successfully steal the entire machine.

When checking out the subject, there will not be extensive information about the weight of an ATM bought for a bank, but for private ATM operators, there are companies that sell them.

A quick check reveals that a private ATM, like the one they sell, weighs between 200 and 300 pounds.

Where Did The Attempted ATM Theft Happen?

The guys in the attempt at Catalyst Bank's South College locations had a truck and some chains, so they tried, but ATMs at banks are likely bolted down into the ground along with other security features.

Even if you are successful, you will likely still have to spend a tremendous amount of time and money to get into the machine if you are lucky enough to steal it.

What Do The Suspects Look Like?

Here is a picture of the suspects we received. While you can't see the faces of either suspect, you can see the clothing of one suspect.

Only a partial clip of the second suspect can be seen. If you recognize any of their clothing, you are urged to contact authorities.

A reward is being offered. Here is the picture of the suspects:
