A tragic crash on I-10 in Lafayette has taken the life of a beloved educator, and now a community is sharing heartfelt tributes to remember her.

Elaine Austin, identified by Lafayette Police as the victim in Tuesday’s fatal crash, was a teacher within the Lafayette Parish School System. According to district leaders, she served as an educator at Westside Elementary in Scott, where her impact reached far beyond the classroom.

School System Mourns Loss Of Dedicated Educator

In a statement released by LPSS, officials described Austin as a “dedicated educator and a valued part of our school community.”

The district acknowledged the emotional toll her passing is having on both staff and students, confirming that additional counselors and support staff are being made available on campus to help those affected.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Austin’s family during this difficult time,” the statement read.

Former Students Share Emotional Tributes

As news of her passing spread, former students quickly took to social media to share memories and express their grief.

Many described Austin as a teacher who made learning fun and meaningful.

“She was the first teacher to ever make science fun,” one former student shared.

Another recalled her unique personality, writing, “She was definitely not an ordinary teacher. She brought wacky and fun to the classroom and impacted kids daily.”

Others spoke about the lasting relationships she built with her students, even long after they left her classroom.

One former student shared that Austin continued to follow their journey into adulthood, always offering encouragement and support, describing her as someone who “truly cared beyond the lessons.”

A Lasting Impact In And Out Of The Classroom

Some tributes reflected on just how far her influence reached.

Noah Brandon, President and CEO of Unitech Training Academy, shared that Austin was his middle school science teacher and even credited her with a Teacher of the Year recognition after he nominated her.

He remembered her excitement and emotional reaction when she received the honor, calling her “gregarious” and someone who had a “big impact on so many lives.”

Details Of The Fatal Crash

According to Lafayette Police, the crash happened on I-10 eastbound near the University Avenue exit.

Investigators say Austin slowed down while traveling on the interstate, and the vehicle behind her crashed into the rear of her vehicle. The impact forced her vehicle onto the University exit ramp, where it came to a stop.

Two people in the other vehicle were transported to a local hospital and are listed in stable condition.

The crash led to a temporary shutdown of all eastbound lanes of I-10 in the area for about two hours as authorities worked the scene.

Community Grieves As Investigation Continues

As the investigation remains ongoing, the focus for many across Lafayette has shifted to honoring Austin’s life and legacy.

It's clear that Austin was more than a teacher. She was someone who made a difference.
