LUS Reminds Customers ‘Don’t Flush Wipes’
Lafayette Consolidated Government and LUS are reminding customers not to flush wipes down toilets because it could cause major service issues. In a Facebook post this morning, the utility system says an abundance of wipes could cause a 'ball' to form.
Wipes will snag in sewer pipes and catch passing debris and grease, and create a “ball” that will grow to plug the pipe or clog the lift stations. They also get drawn into sewer-line and wastewater treatment plant pumps causing additional clogs and damage to the system.
Customers are reminded that even wipes advertised as 'flushable' are an increasing problem for systems that are working overtime. According to the post, "no flush" items include diapers, feminine hygiene products, cotton swabs, rags, wrappers, and medication.
