New Iberia Man Sentenced to 3 Years on Firearms Charge

32-year-old Skyland Washington of New Iberia faces three years in prison, followed by two years of probation, after pleading guilty earlier this year to Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

According to a press release from Acting United States Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook, Washington was arrested following a single vehicle crash in New Iberia on June 12, 2017. An Iberia Parish Sheriff's Deputy and Louisiana State Police Trooper went to the scene and noticed a handgun in the vehicle at Washington's feet. That handgun had been reported stolen.

Also, Washington was previously convicted of a felony and an arrest warrant was obtained for his arrest, according to Van Hook. Washington has previous felony convictions in Iberia Parish for simple burglary and possession of cocaine (2009). Federal law states that it is illegal for a convicted felon to be in possession of a firearm or ammunition.
