Lockdown Lifted In New Iberia; 1 Man In Custody (UPDATED)
The lockdown has been lifted and the situation has been resolved. New Iberia Police Department spokesman Captain John Babin says 27-year-old Joel P. Polite was taken into custody after two hours of negotiations. Polite was questioned and released. No charges have been filed at this time.
Two schools in New Iberia are on lockdown as police there are trying to secure a suspect who apparently has barricaded himself inside of a home there. Police say it's possible the man could be armed, and he has barricaded himself inside of the Rosalie Street home.
The two schools in New Iberia that are on lockdown are Hopkins Elementary and Anderson Middle school. A police department spokesman tells our news partners at KATC that a police spokesman is asking people to avoid the area. He added that the students are safe, but they must operate as if the man who has barricaded himself inside the home is armed until they learn otherwise.
